David Begbie discovered the properties of steel mesh as an art student in 1977. Since then his work has been exhibited globally and has been an enormous inspiration to architects, designers, photographers and collectors, as well as to other artists. His work has been imitated and copied worldwide.
Despite having no palpable substance or surface - the mesh sculptures are transparent and 90% air -Begbie's sculptures have a physical presence to rival any solid form. The introduction of strategic lighting as an integral part of the composition results in projected shadows, creating an optical fusion of image and object.
David studied at Winchester School of Art (1975); Gloucestershire College of Art and Design - BA Hons (1977 - 80); The Slade School of Art (1980 - 82) Post Graduate H.D.F.A. University College London. He lives and works in South East London.
